In a significant development, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Tamil Nadu has finalized its seat-sharing agreement with the Left parties ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The alliance, led by DMK President M K Stalin, has allotted two seats each to the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].An official release from the DMK confirmed the successful conclusion of seat-sharing talks, solidifying the alliance between the DMK and the Left parties. This strategic move reinforces the multi-party Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA) formed by the DMK, aiming to consolidate support and secure victory in the forthcoming elections.
Prior to this agreement, the DMK had already allocated one seat each to its allies, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Kongu Desiya Murpokku Kazhagam (KMDK), further broadening the coalition’s reach across various demographics and regions of the state.
This allocation mirrors the distribution of seats during the 2019 elections, where the two Left parties secured two seats each and emerged victorious. The CPI(M) represented constituencies in Madurai and Coimbatore, while the CPI held seats in Tiruppur and Nagapattinam (SC), reflecting their strong presence and influence in these regions.
The DMK-led alliance, which also includes the Indian National Congress, demonstrated formidable strength during the previous Lok Sabha polls in 2019. Together, they clinched an overwhelming victory by securing 38 out of the 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, in addition to triumphing in the lone Puducherry union territory segment
