In a commendable initiative aimed at enhancing women’s safety and security, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has rolled out a specialized ‘pink squad’. Comprising women trained in martial arts and self-defense techniques, this dedicated team is set to provide a safe and secure commuting experience for female passengers. The ‘pink squad’ will be stationed at metro stations with high footfall, ensuring a visible presence and offering assistance to women commuters during peak hours. Additionally, members of the squad will accompany women passengers on their journeys, providing a reassuring presence and offering support whenever necessary. This initiative comes in response to the findings of a women’s safety survey conducted by CMRL, which engaged with over 12,000 female travelers in June last year. The survey aimed to gauge the safety concerns and experiences of women using the metro system, with a focus on identifying areas for improvement and implementing targeted measures to address safety challenges. The introduction of the ‘pink squad’ reflects CMRL’s commitment to prioritising the safety and well-being of its female passengers. By deploying trained personnel equipped with martial arts and self-defense skills, CMRL seeks to empower women and create a secure environment that instills confidence and peace of mind.
