Vijay announced the launch of his political party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, on Friday. This marks a historic moment as Vijay becomes only the second superstar, following in the footsteps of the legendary M G Ramachandran (MGR), to venture into the realm of politics in Tamil Nadu. Vijay’s foray into politics brings with it the question of whether he can challenge the established political status quo in the state. Drawing parallels with MGR, Vijay’s unparalleled superstardom emerges as his strongest asset in this new endeavor. While belonging to the Christian community with roots in the Udayar community, Vijay’s universal popularity suggests that he can potentially unite diverse segments of the population. Political observers in Tamil Nadu note that his fan base extends across both rural and urban demographics, spanning multiplexes and C class cinema halls. Historically, other actors who entered politics strategically selected constituencies aligned with their audience base. Vijayakanth targeted rural voters by choosing the Virudhachalam constituency, known for its large proportion of rural residents. Kamal Haasan, in contrast, aimed for an educated, urban demographic by contesting from Coimbatore South. However, Vijay’s fans, characterized by their presence in multiplexes and diverse cinema halls, reflect a unique and widespread appeal. The journey of Vijay from the silver screen to the political stage will undoubtedly be watched closely.
