Ahead of Pongal, government bus services in Tamil Nadu are likely to face disruption as state transport workers’ unions have announced an indefinite strike from January 9, 2024. The unions have placed 6 major demands including better pay, filling of the vacant driver and conductor posts, financial support to all eight transport corporations, and release of pending dearness allowance of pensioners. The triangle negotiation talks between the state government, Labour Welfare Department, and transport unions that were held last night ended up in failure. With no compromise reached in the tri-party talks, the transport union executives have announced that they will start the strike on January 9. The prominent transport unions including CITU, AITUC, and HMS unions to participate in the strike, while the Anna Trade Union Council attached to the AIADMK has said that it will go on strike alone.
