In a heated exchange of words amidst the aftermath of unprecedented rains affecting Chennai and southern districts, Chief Minister M K Stalin accused Leader of Opposition K Palaniswami of indulging in what he termed as “cheap politics.” The verbal sparring took place during the Christmas celebration organized by the DMK minority wing in the city. Stalin, addressing the gathering, expressed his dismay over Palaniswami’s alleged politicking during a time when the state is grappling with the impact of severe flooding. The Chief Minister argued that irrespective of political affiliations, all parties, including the opposition like AIADMK, should come together to work alongside the government in times of extreme distress. The CM highlighted the need for solidarity during crises, citing the DMK’s proactive approach during the Covid pandemic through the ‘Ondrinaivom Va’ program. Stalin asserted, “No one came forward like that. Even when they were the ruling party during the Covid pandemic, they did not go on the field. Only the opposition DMK went to the people.” Stalin took particular exception to Palaniswami’s recent statement proclaiming AIADMK as the savior of minorities. He accused the Leader of Opposition of engaging in political opportunism, pointing out his past support for controversial measures such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Article 370 abrogation, and triple talaq. Stalin questioned Palaniswami’s credibility, stating, “He has developed a newfound love for minorities. Did he speak against the BJP? No. People would not be deceived by his drama.” The Chief Minister concluded with a prediction, asserting that India would witness the formation of a new government after the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The exchange highlights the ongoing political tensions in the state, where contrasting narratives and accusations are taking center stage even in the face of a natural calamity.
