Chennai, Dec 13: Chaos unfolded at the revered Sri Ranganatha Swamy Temple in Trichy when a pilgrimage of Ayyappa devotees from Andhra Pradesh took a tumultuous turn, alleging an attack by temple guards. The incident occurred during the devotees’ journey across Tamil Nadu as part of their pilgrimage to Sabarimala in Kerala.
The situation escalated when devotees, standing near the sanctum sanctorum, began chanting ‘Govinda,’ a traditional mantra associated with Venkateshwara Swamy. Allegedly, temple security guards intervened, instructing them to cease the chanting, leading to a confrontation that left two Ayyappa devotees injured. One pilgrim was reported sitting on the temple floor, bleeding.
As the confrontation intensified, additional Ayyappa devotees gathered, prompting the intervention of local law enforcement. Both parties involved have filed complaints, initiating an ongoing investigation into the incident.
The clash has sparked criticism of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department’s handling of the situation. K Annamalai, Tamil Nadu BJP chief, denounced the incident as an “arrogance” of the HR&CE department. In response, the BJP’s Trichy district unit has announced a protest outside the Srirangam Ranganatha Swamy Temple, demanding stringent action against those perceived to have compromised the sanctity of the temple.
As the investigation unfolds, this incident raises concerns about religious tolerance, temple management, and the need for a peaceful coexistence between devotees and temple authorities. The outcome of the investigation and subsequent actions will likely influence the broader conversation around religious freedom and cultural respect.
