In a recent political rally in Srirangam, K Annamalai, the state unit president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, made some controversial statements and unveiled several promises if the BJP were to form the government in the state. Annamalai’s remarks have sparked debates and discussions in the political landscape of Tamil Nadu.

One of the most striking statements made by Annamalai was his declaration to remove the statue of Periyar, a prominent figure in Tamil Nadu’s social and political history. Periyar is known for his atheist beliefs and his criticism of organized religion. Annamalai accused Periyar of asserting that there is no God and labeling those who worship God as fools. This statement has stirred emotions, as Periyar is a highly revered figure in the Dravidian movement and his statue holds significant cultural and historical importance.
Annamalai also criticized the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) for erecting a statue of Periyar when they came to power in 1967. He vowed that the BJP, if in power, would remove the statue and flag associated with Periyar. Such a move would undoubtedly be met with resistance and could further polarize the already complex political landscape in Tamil Nadu.
The BJP leader went on to accuse the DMK of speaking against Sanatana Dharma and alleged that they have been responsible for the destruction of temples. Annamalai pledged that the BJP would scrap the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department, a contentious issue given the importance of temples in Tamil Nadu’s culture and society.
Annamalai also targeted M Palaniyandi, the Srirangam MLA, accusing him of being more focused on running a sand quarry in Karur than fulfilling his duties in executing developmental projects. He even claimed to possess an audio recording as proof of Palaniyandi’s alleged misconduct.
Additionally, Annamalai leveled accusations against Minister KN Nehru, suggesting that he had accumulated wealth surpassing that of Microsoft founder Bill Gates. These allegations of corruption and wealth accumulation have the potential to impact the political landscape.
In response to the Law Minister Regupathy’s statement about arresting him, Annamalai challenged the government, stating that if they had the courage, they should arrest him without waiting until 2024.
