Tamil Nadu government has imposed a complete ban on the manufacture, sale, storage, and use of ‘Manjha threads’ made from synthetic materials. This decision, aimed at curbing the tragic consequences associated with these lethal kite strings, was officially notified in the government Gazette on October 30.The ban is a result of the alarming rise in incidents where ‘Manjha threads,’ primarily crafted from nylon, plastic, or other synthetic materials, have caused severe injuries and even fatalities among humans, animals, and, particularly, birds. Such threads have gained notoriety for their cutting capabilities, making them a grave danger to all forms of life that come into contact with them.
The order issued by the Tamil Nadu government not only bans the production and sale of synthetic kite strings but also places restrictions on their storage and usage. To enforce this crucial measure, district collectors, police officials, and forest officers have been granted the authority to oversee the ban’s implementation. This multi-pronged approach aims to ensure strict compliance with the new regulation.
