In a significant move aimed at improving public transportation and easing commutes for residents in Tamil Nadu, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) in Chennai is on the verge of adding 352 low-floor buses to its existing fleet. Simultaneously, the cities of Coimbatore and Madurai are set to receive 100 buses each as part of this large-scale procurement effort. As the procurement process enters its final stages, this expansion is poised to make a positive impact on public transport in the region.
The introduction of 352 low-floor buses into the MTC fleet is a remarkable step in the direction of modernizing Chennai’s public transportation system. Low-floor buses are designed to provide easy boarding and alighting for passengers, including those with limited mobility. These buses are more accessible and user-friendly, catering to a diverse range of commuters, including the elderly, differently-abled individuals, and parents with strollers, says social activist Kumaran.
