Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president K Annamalai has called on the state government to exercise caution in considering the release of individuals involved in the Coimbatore bomb blast, emphasising the gravity of their actions and the need for justice. Annamalai’s appeal comes in the wake of discussions in the Tamil Nadu Assembly about the release of life-term convicts, including those associated with the Coimbatore bomb blast.
In February 1998, Coimbatore was rocked by a bomb blast orchestrated by radical Islamic fundamentalists, resulting in the tragic loss of 58 lives and leaving over 200 injured. The Supreme Court recently rejected bail applications from some of the convicts involved in this case, underscoring the heinous nature of the act.
Annamalai expressed his concerns about the discussions surrounding the release of individuals connected to this infamous event. He highlighted the fact that the wounds from the Coimbatore bomb blast in 1998 still linger in the memories of the people. Additionally, he pointed out that Coimbatore experienced another disturbing incident involving a suicide bombing in October, with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arresting 13 individuals connected to this terrorist act.
The BJP leader expressed apprehension that some may prioritize minority appeasement over the safety and well-being of the constituents who elected them. He called for good judgment to prevail and appealed to Chief Minister M K Stalin to reconsider the release of radical Islamic fundamentalists involved in the Coimbatore bomb blast, emphasizing the need for justice and ensuring the safety of the public.
