In a significant development, the Tamil Nadu School Education Minister, Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, has announced a series of measures aimed at resolving the ongoing protests by various groups of teachers in the state. The minister’s actions come as an appeal to the protesting teachers to end their hunger strike and return to work, with assurances that their demands will be addressed. One of the primary demands from secondary grade teachers has been “equal pay for equal work.” Minister Poyyamozhi revealed that a three-member committee has been formed specifically to investigate this issue. The committee’s task is to finalize recommendations within three months, after which the report will be submitted to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for a decision. This move reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of secondary grade teachers and ensuring fair compensation for their work. Another group of teachers, the part-time educators, has been advocating for the regularization of their employment status and improvements in pay. Minister Poyyamozhi disclosed that there are 10,359 teachers who have been working as part-time employees for ten years or more. To address their grievances, the government has decided to increase their consolidated pay from ₹10,000 to ₹12,500. Additionally, the government will extend medical insurance coverage to these part-time teachers, providing them with a significant benefit of ₹10 lakh per year.
