Huge haul of foreign cash, gold at Chennai airport

Chennai: Based on specific information, four passengers bound for Dubai and five passengers bound for Colombo were intercepted by the Air Intelligence Unit officers at Chennai airport.

‘On personal search, assorted foreign currency of various denominations totally valued at Rs. 1.95 Crores were found concealed in their rectum and ingeniously concealed in between the layers of foam material in the hand baggage. The same were seized under the Customs Act, 1962,’ an official release said. Two passengers namely Asarf Ali of Seven Wells, Chennai and Vignesh of Nagapattinam were arrested.

Based on specific intelligence, Rahumathulla of Pudur arriving from Dubai to Chennai was intercepted at exit by the AIU Officers. On examination of his baggage, six gold foils concealed in deodorant spray cans and twelve gold rods concealed in ladies wallet along with cigarettes and electronic goods concealed in his baggage were recovered. Totally 715 grams gold, cigarettes and electronic goods totally worth Rs 43.92 lakh were seized by Chennai Air Customs. The passenger was arrested.

Further investigations are under progress, according to the press release issued by the Principal Commissioner of Customs, Chennai International Airport.
