New Delhi: India is once again witnessing a spike in Covid-19 cases. The country registered 2,183 new coronavirus infections taking the total tally of Covid-19 cases to 4,30,44,280, while the active cases declined to 11,542, according to the Union Health Ministry data today. The death toll climbed to 5,21,965 with 214 fresh fatalities.
The new cases reported today are 89.82 per cent higher than 1,150 infections logged on Sunday. The daily positivity rate now stands at 0.83 per cent, remarkably higher than 0.31 per cent registered on Sunday. The weekly positivity rate is now at 0.32 per cent.
Among the cities witnessing a surge in cases is national capital Delhi, which reported 517 Covid cases. The total number of Covid-infected patients in Delhi, according to yesterday’s bulletin, is 1,518 – the highest since 3 March this year.
A worrying surge has been witnessed in Delhi yet again days after the mask mandate was dropped and in-person classes resumed fully in the city’s schools after a gap of nearly two years.
North India has been reporting most number of Covid-19 cases, pushing the country’s tally of new infections higher.
India’s Covid-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on 7 August, 2020, 30 lakh on 23 August, 40 lakh on 5 September and 50 lakh on 16 September. It went past 60 lakh on 28 September, 70 lakh on 11 October, crossed 80 lakh on 29 October, 90 lakh on 20 November and surpassed the one-crore mark on 19 December.
A total of 5,21,965 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 1,47,827 from Maharashtra, 68,615 from Kerala, 40,057 from Karnataka, 38,025 from Tamilnadu, 26,158 from Delhi, 23,500 from Uttar Pradesh and 21,200 from West Bengal.
According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 2,61,440 (2 lakh 61 thousand 4 hundred and 40) samples were tested for Covid-19 in the country. Till date, 83,21,04,846 (83 crore 21 lakh 4 thousand 8 hundred and 46) samples have been tested across the country.
