Chennai: India is likely to face a vaccine shortage for the next few months, Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla said. He also said that the capacity will increase to 100 million doses only by July from the current 60-70 million a month.

In the interview, Poonawalla said that by February, there was a sense that India had started to turn the tide on the pandemic. In the aftermath of the second wave of Covid-19 that followed, Serum Institute and Poonawalla faced criticism fro its lack of supply, with much opposition to the company’s new pricing of its coronavirus vaccine.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Poonawalla has moved to the UK with his family for ‘an extended period of time,’ He did so just as the UK put India on its red list and banned all travellers from the country.

Poonawalla said he made the move because there was a grave threat to his life in India. It may be recalled that the government recently provided him Y-class security.
