Chennai: For the first time in 2021, Tamilnadu will go under a complete lockdown tomorrow, as part of the government’s plan to implement full curfew on Sundays to control the spread of Covid-19.

According to sources, special teams of police and other departments have been formed to monitor the situation across the State and to penalise violators.

Check posts will be erected on roads and those who venture out without any essential reason will be taken to task, sources said.

Tomorrow, takeaway services from hotels and restaurants are permitted from 6 am to 10 am; 12 pm to 3 pm; and 6 pm to 9 pm. Food delivery services will be allowed to operate only at these times.

Other e-commerce firms are not allowed to operate on Sunday, officials said.

Meat shops, fish markets, vegetable shops, cinema theatres, malls and all commercial shops will remain closed. All essential services will however be available.

Weddings, funerals are allowed on Sundays as long as they have a maximum 100 attendees and 50 attendees.

The Sunday lockdown will not cover 2 May which is the date fixed by the Election Commission of India for counting of votes for the Assembly election held on 6 April.

During night curfew, which is already in force from 10 pm to 4 am daily, public and private transport services, autos and cabs and movement of private vehicles are not permitted.

The latest restrictions have been imposed due to the laxity shown by the people in wearing masks and maintaining social distancing norms, that has resulted in sharp increase of active infections.
