Chennai: A fire broke out in an ATM kiosk of a private at suburban Poonamallee on Wednesday in which cash kept in it has been reduced to ashes.
Sources said the amount of cash burnt in the fire would be known only after the bank officials completely checked the data on when the currencies were loaded and how much were withdrawn by customers.
After a smoke emanated from the ATM, passers-by alerted the police and the fire and rescue services department who rushed to the spot and doused the flames.
The bank authorities have loaded currency notes a few days back and these notes were said to have been gutted in the fire, which might have caused due to a electric short circuit in the AC unit inside the ATM kiosk. The exact loss was being ascertained.
