Chennai: The ongoing agitation by farmer unions in Delhi does not seem to rest anytime soon, with the protestors announcing a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on 8 December.

The farmers said they would be occupying toll plazas on that day. The decision to hold a Bandh, comes ahead of the fifth round of talks with the government, that is scheduled for today.

In a press conference, farmer leader Gurnam Singh Chadoni said, if the Centre does not accept their demands during the talks today, they will intensify their agitation.

“We have decided to give a ‘Bharat Bandh’ call on 8 December, during which we will also occupy all toll plazas,” said Harvinder Singh Lakhwal, another farmer leader.

“We have planned to block all roads leading to Delhi in the coming days if new farm laws are not scrapped”, he said.

The call for the Bandh was supported by various other farmers’ organisations.

Hannan Mollah, general secretary of All India Kisan Sabha, said, “We need to take this protest forward”.

Meanwhile, Canada PM Justin Trudeau continued to express his solidarity with the farmers, despite the Centre’s disapproval of his ‘interference’.

He said, Canada will always stand up for “right to peaceful protest and human right”, even as India summoned the Canadian High Commissioner and categorically stated that it is India’s ‘internal matter’.
