Art is the embodiment of soul to many and for Ramya Sadasivam of the Chennai, it is a way to derive pleasure.

The resident of Elango Nagar in Virugambakkam is a born artist and News Today had a chat with her at her residence.

A native of Chennai, Ramya said she was fascinated by art from the time she was in primary school and that she derived pleasure by bringing life to a canvas using colours.

After graduation and a further degree, she rediscovered her passion for art and is a full-fledged artist now.

Ramya says that she drew inspiration from two people – her mother and her art master.

“My mother had a natural talent for arts and crafts. When I was in sixth standard, I saw her drawing a princess, which inspired me to try my hand at drawing. The first time I drew, I did pencil work,” recalls Ramya.

As for her second inspiration, she said Ibrahim, her school arts master, used make one of the students pose as a model and draw them instantly.

As for her preference of medium, Ramya says that she loves oil on canvas. She also added that she is a big fan of natural emotions and tries to portray them in her works.

The MBA graduate said, “I go on tours to villages and try to depict what I see on canvas. I have done portraits which depict women in their most natural elements like when a woman breastfeeds her infant, or when she is comforting a child, kneading a dough or just graciously lost in thoughts.”

“Nude art challenged me,” says Ramya, and adds, “I saw it only as an art form and nothing controversial.”

The young artist stated that she likes works of artists such as S M Pandit, Valdimir Volegav, Daniel Gerhartz and Suchitra Bhonsle.

Ramya is the proud winner of Prafulla Dhanukar award in 2016, Tamilnadu Best Artist award in 2016, Camlin award by Lalit Kala Akademi, Mumbai, and an international award by Portrait Society of America Bold Brush, among others.

As for her advice to young artists, Ramya says that artists should not give up on their passion because of the struggles and rejections they face.
