As soon as we step into EG Mathew’s terrace at his residence in Choolaimedu, a gentle breeze and the warmth of fresh plants engulfs us. Interestingly, his lush green roof-top garden has remained this way for the past 30 years.

Speaking to News Today, he says, “Although I run a business here, I belong to a family of farmers. This fuelled me to create my own garden. I made sure to waterproof the floors and include other necessary equipment to ensure that my plants grow with ease.”

“I always recycle whatever products we use at home. I often make compost by re-using food waste that comes from our home, as a growth substance to the soil. I even re-use water. After all these years, I am happy to say that most of the trash at home is effectively utilised,” he adds.

Mathew is a strong advocate of organic products. “It is always better to avoid consuming food that is available in the market, as these are grown with pesticides. These can cause severe health concerns. It is better to start growing our own food,” he says.

He also stresses the importance of creating awareness among the public. “The government should encourage residents to do initiatives like roof gardening, as these also reduce the garbage generated from a home. Also, there’s a possibility to make it as a sustainable business too,” he concludes.

Mathew can be reached at 98840-12912.
