Chennai: A woman died of burn injuries at a government hospital after she set herself on fire distressed as her mother-in-law scolded her over some missing cash.

According to the police, Baby (21), wife of Karthikeyan, lived at Thiruvalluvarpuram, in Choolaimedu. The couple was married for four years.

On 20 March at 10 am, her mother-in-law scolded her as Rs 4,000 had gone missing from the house. After reprimanding her, the mother-in-law left for work. Upset over this, Baby, a housewife, was alone at home and set fire to herself. Her neighbours rushed her to the Government Kilpauk Hospital.

She told a magistrate who came to take her statement that no one was responsible for her death. Baby died in hospital yesterday.
