Anna Park at United India Colony, is one of the most-frequented spots here. But of late, there are few issues that need to be resolved, say many.
About a month ago, Municipal authorities started installing gym equipment and encroaching into a space that was previously devoted for the children’s play area.
“There used to be a slide and a swing, but these were dismantled to make space for the gym props,” says Bhaskaran, a resident living here for over 30 years. “Ever since they came up, children have found it difficult to play.”
Several uncleared rocks have been left close to the play set. These debris were probably tossed aside during the construction of the latest gym, suspect people here.
“Work is still underway and construction material gets piled up in a corner. Huge stones near see-saw sets and slides pose a threat to children,” he adds.
Residents also feel that maintenance should be improved. “Many benches are covered by bird waste making it difficult for senior citizens to sit. Ever since a new watchman took up the job, the park isn’t how it used to be,” says Bhaskaran.
Likewise, another social worker in the neighborhood, Vetrivel, shares his concerns. “Walkers are finding it difficult, as the path dedicated for them is now blocked by those who exercise,” he says.
Bhaskaran meanwhile, adds that he has no objection against those who come here to work out, but, “The authorities had previously installed gym equipment right next to the space meant for yoga. And now, again this additional training facility stops children from having fun. Many have now stopped coming, which is sad.” Locals here are now hopeful that this issue is taken up by authorities at the earliest.
