Diabetic Amputation prevention camp at M V Hospital

Chennai: As an initiative for prevention of Diabetic Amputation, M V Hospital for Diabetes, Royapuram will be hosting a free foot check up camp as a part of International Day of Persons with Disabilities campaign.

A press release said the 8-day camp for diabetic patients with a history of amputation will be held till 10 December at the hospital’s Royapuram, Adyar and Velacheri branch. M V Hospital for Diabetes, chief diabetologist Vijay Viswanathan said, “Diabetes Mellintus has always been a serious public challenge to India. With estimated of 80 million cases in this year, the figure is expected to almost double to 134 million by 2025. Along with the raising prevalence of diabetes, there has been a steady increase in its complications which includes diabetic foot. About 15 per cent – 25 per cent of the diabetic patients may develop foot ulcer during their lifetime and more than 80 per cent of amputation begins with foot ulcer. A proper diabetic management can help prevent foot ulcers and thereby preventing the risk of amputation.”
