ICF dispatches 78 coaches in five variants to Lanka

Chennai: Not a long time has passed since the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) launched the much awaited Train 18 which went on to receive laurels from millions across India.

Now ICF has dispatched an ingeniously built Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU) to Sri Lanka on Monday.

ICF had bagged an order for export of six rakes of DEMU which consists of 78 coaches in five variants. These trains are used for short and medium distance in non-electrified sections.

Rites Ltd., an engineering consultancy firm along with the ICF executed the export order for the Island nation as a part of an economic cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

At ICF, the first rake of 13-car DEMU for the Sri Lankan Railways was handed over to RITES Ltd director (Technical) Mukesh Rathore, group general manager Manobendra Ghoshal and senior officials.

Sources from ICF said that the trains will soon be shipped to Sri Lanka from Chennai port in a few days. Previously, ICF had exported 120 DEMU coaches to Sri Lanka between 2010-12.

ICF General Manager Sudhanshu Mani said, “We are expecting orders from the Bangladesh railways. Negotiations are going on between Indian Railways and Bangladesh for exporting coaches from ICF.” He also said that they are expecting more orders from Sri Lanka to export 160 coaches.

FEATURES
* Each DEMU rake consist of 13 cars.
* They include two air-conditioned cars with rotatable seats, two business class cars.
* ICF has used the interior fittings of the coaches with austenitic stainless steel.
* A special type of paints have been used on bogies and under-frame of the coaches to prevent corrosion.
