Chennai: Dengue scare has gripped the locality of Adyar in the city, so to say. Here is what few residents have to say on this issue, that is increasingly becoming a concern.

Balaji Deenadayalan, president of Kasthuribai Nagar Eighth Main Road Residents Welfare Association, said, “At Canal Bank Road, the construction of a Storm Water Drain (SWD) has started. There is a high chance of water stagnation. They should not have commenced this work during the monsoon time.”

He also said that the empty plots in the locality are breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Another perennial problem is the canal near the East end side of Kasturibai Nagar Railway Station, it is said.

“The water cannot flow smoothly here due to wild growth of plants,” he pointed out. Similarly, a resident of Kottivakkam, M Srinivasan, said, “The SWDs are misused by residents who illegally connect to it to let out their sewers. The Kottivakkam canal is also in a bad shape with people dumping garbage. Only a clean environment can keep all of us healthy.”

Meanwhile, a senior health official of Zone-13 spoke to News Today about the cases of dengue in the locality.

“Right now we are having only suspected fever cases. No positive ones. Steps are being taken to prevent dengue. We have intensified activities from 6 am everyday. We are doing house-to-house inspection. This has been going on for the past one month,” the official said, adding, “The sources (of dengue) are removed from around homes and vacant lands. We are also conducting fogging activities and regular medical camps.”
