Chennai: Residents of Madhavaram can breathe with a sigh of serenity as a new horticulture park was opened recently. Situated about 16 km away from the Koyambedu bus stand, it covers an area of 21 acres.
The horticulture park also includes a State horticulture farm which was established back in 1980.
Th farm covers an area of about five acres and has facilitates like shade net house, mist chambers for propagation of different types of ornamental plants and poly green house for demonstration of cultivation of high value vegetables.
In the farm, there are different types of foliage, tree saplings, vegetable seeds and indoor ornamental plants. They are all classified and distributed to residents in and around Chennai. Enriched farm yard manure bags are also distributed at the farm. Plants and tree saplings are sold between Rs 5 and Rs 60.
There are other proposed developments in the farm which includes a vertical garden nursery, ornamental plants and cut flowers, tissue culture lab to produce banana, a hi-tech poly green house, mushrooms and beans to bar chocolate production unit.
A demo garden has a landscape that includes different styles of garden like Japanese, trophy, bog, medicinal and ornamental. A children’s play area has fountains and ponds.
The farm also promotes farm tourism where participants will be involved in different farm and recreation activities at forth developing ornamental and demo garden. The entry tickets for adults is Rs 15 and for children is Rs 10.
