Chennai and several districts in Tamil Nadu are experiencing intense rainfall under the influence of the Northeast Monsoon, leading to significant disruption in daily life. Heavy rain has been pounding the city since morning, accompanied by strong winds, causing waterlogging on key roads and forcing residents to stay indoors.
Due to the severity of the weather, schools in multiple districts, including Chennai, Pudukkottai, Salem, Perambalur, and Namakkal, have been closed, with holidays extended to colleges in 12 districts.
The India Meteorological Department has issued Red Alerts for Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai, while Chennai and many neighboring districts face Orange Alerts for continued heavy to very heavy rainfall. T
The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is predicted to intensify further, potentially worsening rain conditions in the coming days. Transportation and office commuters have faced severe hardship due to flooded streets and slowed traffic.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution and limit outdoor activities during heavy showers, especially as hazardous conditions like falling tree branches and water accumulation pose risks.
The state government is actively monitoring the situation and undertaking flood mitigation efforts to safeguard public safety as the monsoon continues to batter the region.
