The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPM] has sharply criticized actor Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for his delayed response to the recent stampede in Karur. CPM General Secretary MA Baby accused Vijay of a “seven-hour delay” in reaching the campaign venue, which he claims contributed to the tragedy. Baby described the actor’s subsequent disappearance, along with other party leaders, as unbecoming of a political leader.
In contrast, Baby commended the Tamil Nadu government’s swift actions, including the appointment of Justice Aruna Jagadeesan to investigate the incident. He also praised Chief Minister M.K. Stalin for his prompt visit to the site and for sending ministers to support the affected families. Additionally, Baby lauded the medical team’s efforts, noting that their quick response saved all but two of the injured individuals.
A 14-year-old survivor, Sakthivel, reported that the organizers failed to implement necessary crowd control measures, which may have contributed to the chaos.
In response to the tragedy, a six-member CPM delegation, led by Baby, visited the bereaved families in Karur, offering condolences and assuring them of continued support. The delegation also pledged to monitor the situation and revisit the families after a year to assess their well-being.
