At least four people were killed and more than 70 injured on Wednesday during protests in Leh. Demonstrators were demanding statehood and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule.
The protests turned violent, and authorities imposed a curfew in the city. Gatherings of more than five people were banned.
During the unrest, protesters set fire to the local BJP office and a vehicle. Police used teargas and baton charges to control the situation.
Following the violence, the Union administration in Leh enforced a curfew under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, and banned all protests and public gatherings.
