Actor Nazriya returns to the Tamil industry with the web series The Madras Mystery, to be streamed on Sony LIV. The series also stars Shantanu Bhagyaraj and is directed by AL Vijay. It is based on journalist Lakshmikanthan murder in 1944.

The murder of Lakshmikanthan remains one of the most intriguing and controversial criminal cases in Indian history. Despite extensive media attention and legal proceedings, the true perpetrators were never identified, leaving behind a legacy of unanswered questions and a tarnished reputation for those wrongfully convicted.

On November 7, 1944, C. N. Lakshmikanthan, a prominent film journalist known for his sensationalist reporting, was fatally stabbed in Madras (now Chennai). He succumbed to his injuries the following day. The case quickly attracted widespread attention, particularly due to Lakshmikanthan’s controversial writings that targeted several prominent figures in the Tamil film industry. Among those arrested were renowned actor M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, comedian N. S. Krishnan, and director S. M. Sriramulu Naidu. The trio was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

However, their convictions were overturned in 1947 by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, which ordered a retrial. The retrial concluded with their acquittal, but by then, their careers and lives had been irreparably damaged. Bhagavathar, once a celebrated star, died in poverty in 1959, while Krishnan’s subsequent films failed to recapture his former glory. The case remains officially unsolved, with the real culprits never brought to justice.

Decades later, the Lakshmikanthan murder continues to captivate public interest. In 2022, The Madras Players staged a docu-drama titled ‘Lakshmikanthan’, based on the case, highlighting its enduring impact on the city’s cultural and legal landscape. The case serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities surrounding media ethics, celebrity culture, and the pursuit of justice in a rapidly changing society.
