The DMK and its allies will hold a protest on September 2 against the BJP-led Centre over the US tariff hike that has badly hit Tiruppur’s knitwear industry.
A joint statement from the DMK, Congress, VCK, MDMK, CPI, CPI(M), MNM, and TVK said the protest would take place near Tiruppur Railway Station. Leaders of all alliance parties will join the demonstration.
The US recently increased tariffs on Indian textile imports to 50 percent. This has caused losses of about ₹3,000 crore to Tiruppur’s exports and has put thousands of workers at risk of losing their jobs.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had earlier written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Centre to help the affected industries and workers.
