The Madras High Court has directed the Director General of Police (DGP) to initiate disciplinary proceedings against five IPS officers for dereliction of duty. The order was issued by Justice P. Velmurugan while addressing a petition filed by a woman named Vijayarani, who sought a final report on a case registered in 2015.
The court found that although the Cuddalore police had closed the case in 2017, they failed to submit a closure report to the jurisdictional magistrate and inform the complainant. The five officers, who had served as Superintendents of Police in the Cuddalore district since 2015, were held accountable for this procedural lapse. Justice Velmurugan noted that such failures were recurring and constituted a serious lapse in supervisory responsibility.
To prevent similar incidents, the judge has ordered the DGP to issue a comprehensive circular to all police units and commissionerates within four weeks. The DGP is also required to submit a detailed action-taken report to the court within three months.
