The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 15 crore to provide martial arts training to girls studying in government schools across the state.
The initiative, launched under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, aims to empower girl students by enhancing their self-confidence and ensuring their safety. Training will be offered in disciplines such as Karate, Silambam, and Taekwondo.
According to the School Education Department, around 3 lakh girl students studying from Classes 6 to 12 will benefit from this scheme in the current academic year.
Officials stated that qualified trainers will be appointed in each district and that regular sessions will be held as part of the school timetable. The goal is to not only equip students with self-defence skills but also promote discipline, fitness, and mental strength among them.
This move is part of the government’s broader efforts to promote gender equality and ensure a safe and secure environment for girls in educational institutions.
