With the new biometric or app-based check-in system, attendance records will now be verifiable, structured, and possibly made available to the public, ensuring that MPs are held more accountable to their constituents.This reform could bring about a cultural shift within Parliament, where attendance will no longer be a mere formality but a measure of responsibility. While some may view it as a surveillance tool, it must be seen as a mechanism to restore public trust in democratic institutions. Taxpayers have a right to know whether their elected representatives are participating in the legislative process, especially when crucial bills and national policies are being debated.
For the system to be truly effective, it must be enforced uniformly across party lines and backed by meaningful consequences for habitual absenteeism. Moreover, attendance data should be made accessible in the public domain through the Lok Sabha website.
