As part of the ambitious renovation, new infrastructure is taking shape on the Gandhi Irwin Road side of the station. A multi-storey car park and a shopping complex are currently under construction, promising enhanced commuter convenience and improved station aesthetics.
A major component of the redevelopment includes the construction of a large footbridge that will seamlessly connect Platforms 1 through 11. “A large footbridge is being constructed to link all platforms. The foundation work is currently underway,” confirmed officials from the Chennai Railway Division.
To facilitate ongoing construction, Platforms 1 and 2 have been closed to passenger services starting yesterday. Platforms 3 and 4 are scheduled to be closed within the next 15 days, which will further impact regular train operations.
Already, the Puducherry MEMU Passenger Train has been rerouted and will no longer halt at Egmore Station due to the closure of Platforms 1 and 2. Railway officials have indicated that approximately 10 express trains may also see changes to their routes or schedules in the coming days, with an official announcement expected soon.
The phased platform closures are necessary to ensure the safe and efficient completion of the modernization works, which are expected to significantly elevate the station’s infrastructure, accessibility, and passenger amenities. Commuters are advised to stay updated with official announcements to plan their travel accordingly.
