The Tamil Nadu government has granted in-principle approval for the extension of Chennai Metro’s Corridor 4 from Poonamallee to Parandur, aiming to enhance connectivity to the upcoming greenfield airport and the Kuthambakkam intercity bus terminal. The proposed extension spans 52.94 kilometers and will be implemented in two phases:
Phase I: Poonamallee to Sunguvarchatram (27.9 km)
Phase II: Sunguvarchatram to Parandur
The first phase has an estimated cost of ₹8,779 crore. The entire project includes 20 elevated stations and is projected to cost ₹15,906 crore upon completion.
This metro extension is designed to provide seamless connectivity to the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur and the Kuthambakkam Bus Terminus. It will traverse key industrial and residential hubs, including Chembarambakkam, Thandalam, Irungattukottai, Sriperumbudur, and Sunguvarchatram, thereby facilitating smoother transit and reducing travel time for commuters.
The Detailed Project Report (DPR), prepared by Aarvee Associates, has been approved by the state government and recommended for central funding and external loans. The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will coordinate with the Highways Department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to finalize aspects of the plan, ensuring integration with other infrastructure projects.
The Poonamallee–Parandur metro rail project represents a significant step towards enhancing Chennai’s transportation infrastructure, aiming to provide efficient and sustainable transit options for the city’s growing population.
