Vijay, leader of the TVK party, has raised pointed questions about the government’s handling of natural disasters like cyclones and floods. In a strongly worded statement, he criticized the authorities for their lack of permanent solutions and reliance on temporary relief measures. In his statement, Vijay said: “No matter how severe a cyclone or natural disaster is, people trust the government they have elected to protect them. However, when these very governments fail to stand by the people during challenging times, the anguish they experience cannot be described in words.
“Despite being voted into power with the hope of ensuring public safety, governments have consistently failed to devise proper plans to protect the people. Even basic precautionary measures are overlooked, leaving citizens helpless and vulnerable. How can such self-serving governance be justified?
“Every year, during cyclones and other disasters, it has become a routine for leaders to visit a few affected individuals, pose for photographs, distribute temporary relief, and disappear. Is this the ultimate solution? How can this fleeting performance of sympathy be considered fair or sufficient?”
“During times of floods and other calamities, the moral responsibility of ensuring basic safety and security for the people lies squarely with the government. Yet, the ruling authorities seem to have forgotten this fundamental duty”, he said
Instead of working towards long-term solutions, they completely neglect discussions on climate change and disaster preparedness. Their focus remains solely on superficial, temporary announcements meant to deceive the public, said Vijay
This approach of making minimal efforts, putting on a façade of concern, and relying on short-term fixes is deeply disheartening. History shows that no government that thrives on manipulating and deceiving the people has ever endured in the court of public opinion,, he stated.
Blaming the opposition, mocking criticism, and hiding behind diversionary tactics will not absolve the government of its responsibilities. These actions are pushing people into a perpetual state of despair, he said and added, “However, the strength of the people will eventually overcome these injustices. The future will undoubtedly teach those in power that such shallow governance cannot sustain itself.”
