Tamil Nadu BJP President Annamalai has credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for approving the worker accommodation scheme recently inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The Tamil Nadu government’s SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu) has constructed an accommodation facility with 18,720 beds in Vallam Vadagal, Kanchipuram district, specifically for women workers employed in nearby factories. Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated the facility two days ago and mentioned on his ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) platform, “We have launched a mega project providing safe housing for working women, a first of its kind in India.”
In response, Annamalai issued a statement detailing the origins of the project. He clarified that the scheme was initiated in July 2020 under the Prime Minister’s Affordable Rental Housing Complexes (ARHC) scheme, which aimed to provide low-cost rental accommodation. The Kanchipuram facility, along with similar projects in Sriperumbudur and Chennai, was one of the five projects approved by Prime Minister Modi for Tamil Nadu in September 2021.
The Vallam Vadagal project, which cost ₹707 crore, includes a central government grant of ₹37.44 crore. Additionally, a loan of ₹498 crore was secured from the State Bank of India to finance the project. Annamalai emphasized that Chief Minister Stalin should be well aware of these details.
