Chennai cops arrest 77 rowdies in city-wide crackdown

In a significant crackdown on criminal activities, the Chennai Police have arrested 77 rowdies across the city as part of their ongoing Drive Against Rowdy Elements (DARE). The arrests, carried out on Sunday and Monday, include several notorious history-sheeters known for their criminal backgrounds.
Among those arrested were M Iyyappan (33) from Kodambakkam, S Daniel Joseph (24) and K Naveen Kumar (25) from Adambakkam, A Arun (23) from Palavanthangal, S Kalaimani (30) from Anna Square, D Sanjay (24) from Chintadripet, and P Nelson (47) from Kotturpuram. Police sources revealed that one of the arrested individuals had a pending non-bailable warrant (NBW) against him for skipping court proceedings.
Chennai Police Commissioner A Arun emphasized that the police force will continue to target history-sheeters involved in criminal activities. “Such drives will persist against offenders indulging in criminal activities,” he warned, highlighting the police’s commitment to maintaining law and order in the city.
According to police sources, there are approximately 4,000 history-sheeters in Chennai. The recent arrests are part of a broader strategy by the Chennai Police to curb criminal activities and ensure public safety. The DARE initiative aims to identify and apprehend individuals with a history of criminal behavior, thereby reducing the incidence of crime in the city.
