In response to the increasing frequency and intensity of heat waves in Tamil Nadu, Minister for Revenue and Disaster Management, KKSSR Ramachandran, announced on Monday that heat waves and their impacts will now be declared as a ‘State disaster.’ This declaration comes amid growing concerns over extreme weather conditions, particularly during the first two weeks of April and May, which have significantly affected various parts of the state.Due to the rising temperatures and the prevalence of heat waves, the Tamil Nadu government has implemented several measures to mitigate the impact on its residents. These measures include:
Setting Up Water Ponds: Water ponds have been established in public places to provide relief from the scorching heat.
Special Units in Hospitals: Special units have been set up in government hospitals to treat health problems caused by heat waves, ensuring that affected individuals receive timely and adequate medical care.
Recognizing the need for a more robust disaster management framework, the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management will establish three permanent disaster recovery and relief centers in Chennai and its suburbs. These centers, with an estimated cost of Rs 36 crore, will be crucial for the city’s preparedness and response to various calamities such as cyclones, heavy rains, and floods.
The relief centers will be equipped to pre-collect essential relief items, including drinking water, milk, and bread, in areas identified as vulnerable to most vulnerable. Additionally, they will house search and rescue boats and vehicles necessary for the safe evacuation of the public during emergencies.
Furthermore, the department has planned the construction of two multi-purpose relief centers in Thoothukudi district, at a cost of Rs 17.50 crore. These centers will provide shelter and essential services to people affected by floods, enhancing the state’s overall disaster response capacity.
Minister Ramachandran’s announcement marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions in Tamil Nadu. By declaring heat waves as a state disaster and implementing comprehensive measures for disaster management, the state aims to safeguard its residents and improve its resilience against future calamities.
