Chennai’s Unified Ticketing System gains momentum post LS polls

The prospect of a unified ticketing system for Chennai’s public transport network is set to gain momentum following the conclusion of the Lok Sabha elections and the subsequent withdrawal of the model code of conduct. This innovative initiative, long under consideration, aims to streamline commuting by allowing passengers to use a single ticket across all State-run public transport networks, including the Metro Rail, MTC buses, and suburban trains.

The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has taken proactive steps towards realizing this vision by initiating a tender process to establish the unified ticketing system. The system, which will encompass an integrated app and other essential facilities, holds the promise of revolutionizing the commuting experience for residents and visitors alike.

However, progress on the tender process has been temporarily halted due to the prolonged duration of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections and the enforced model code of conduct. With the code expected to be lifted upon the declaration of election results on June 4, stakeholders anticipate a swift resumption of activities to expedite the implementation of the common ticketing system.

Upon the selection of the winning bidder, the contract will be awarded, paving the way for the swift implementation of the unified ticketing system within a few months. The system is envisioned to offer a host of user-friendly features, including a dedicated mobile app, QR code-based tickets, and a unified card for seamless usage across all State-run transport services.
