Residents of Tamil Nadu are advised to prepare for scorching temperatures as a heatwave is set to peak across the state from May 1 to May 4, according to weather expert Pradeep John. The warning highlights specific areas, including Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kanchepuram, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Trichy, and Karur, which are expected to experience the most intense heatwave conditions.Pradeep John also provided historical context, citing the hottest recorded temperature in Tamil Nadu’s history, which reached a staggering 48.6 degrees Celsius in Tiruttani on May 29, 2003. Additionally, Chennai experienced its hottest day in the past 230 years on May 31, 2003, with temperatures soaring to 45 degrees Celsius. These records underscore the severity of the impending heatwave and the need for residents to take necessary precautions to stay safe and healthy during the extreme weather conditions.
In response to the growing challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events, the Tamil Nadu government is taking proactive measures to enhance weather forecasting capabilities. Two new doppler radars will be installed near Ramanathapuram and Salem to provide more accurate and timely weather predictions. Additionally, the state government is collaborating with the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) to establish nearly 1,000 automatic weather stations, aimed at bridging existing gaps in forecasting across the region. The process of identifying suitable locations for installation has already commenced, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving disaster preparedness and response measures.
