
Today marks the commencement of the grand election season in India, with voting for the first phase of Lok Sabha elections kicking off at 7 am across 21 states and Union Territories. This phase encompasses 102 seats, with all eyes particularly focused on Tamil Nadu, where voting will take place on all 39 Lok Sabha seats.
The stakes are high as the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) aims for a third consecutive term under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Conversely, the Opposition has rallied under the banner of the INDIA alliance, hoping for a change in fortune.
In this initial phase, polling is scheduled on all seats in Tamil Nadu (39), Uttarakhand (5), Arunachal Pradesh (2), Meghalaya (2), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1), Mizoram (1), Nagaland (1), Puducherry (1), Sikkim (1), and Lakshadweep (1). Additionally, voting will occur in various constituencies across Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, Manipur, Tripura, Jammu and Kashmir, and Chhattisgarh.
Simultaneously, assembly elections will be held in Arunachal Pradesh (60 seats) and Sikkim (32 seats).
Over 16.63 crore eligible voters, including 35.67 lakh first-time voters and 3.51 crore young voters aged between 20-29 years, are set to cast their votes. Notably, 11,371 individuals from the third gender community are also eligible to vote.
Several prominent figures, including seven Union Ministers and key political leaders, are contesting in this phase, adding to the significance of the electoral battle.
Security measures have been intensified, particularly in Manipur, which has witnessed ethnic tensions in recent times. Tight security arrangements have been implemented in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat, reflecting the Election Commission’s commitment to ensuring a smooth electoral process.
With over 18 lakh polling personnel deployed across 1.87 lakh polling stations, the Election Commission is geared up to oversee the voting process meticulously.
The seven-phase elections are set to conclude on June 4, culminating in the eagerly awaited announcement of the results. As the nation embarks on this democratic exercise, all eyes remain fixed on the unfolding political landscape, anticipating the verdict of the people.
