In a significant move aimed at enhancing sanitation infrastructure and addressing wastewater management challenges, the Chennai Drinking Water Board has embarked on an extensive underground sewerage project in the Manali and Madhavaram mandals. With an estimated cost of Rs. 1,072.15 crore, this ambitious initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving public health and environmental sustainability in the region.
The foundation stone for the project was laid by Municipal Administration Minister K. N. Nehru, signaling the commencement of a transformative endeavor that promises to modernize sewage infrastructure and bolster wastewater treatment capabilities in Chennai’s northern outskirts.
The scope of the project encompasses the installation of sewer pipes ranging from 250 mm to 750 mm in diameter and force pipes ranging from 150 mm to 1000 mm in diameter, covering a total length of 30.57 km across Vadaperumbakkam, Thiyambakkam, Mathur, and Puzhal areas. Additionally, the project will involve the construction of 7,087 mechanical inlets, 10 pumping stations, and 11 auxiliary sewage pumping stations to facilitate efficient sewage collection and transport.
A key component of the initiative is the transportation of 15.77 million liters of sewage per day to the Kodungaiyur Sewage Treatment Plant for comprehensive treatment, thereby mitigating pollution and safeguarding public health. Furthermore, the project aims to provide 18,581 household sewerage connections across 1,004 streets, benefiting approximately 1,30,353 residents in the targeted areas.
In the Madhavaram locality, a similar effort is underway to address the longstanding issue of inadequate sewerage infrastructure. Under this phase of the project, sewer pipes ranging from 200 mm to 600 mm in diameter and force pipes ranging from 250 mm to 1000 mm in diameter will be laid across 20.44 km of missing streets. This segment of the project will also include the construction of 3,914 mechanical inlets, 3 pumping stations, and 6 auxiliary sewage pumping stations.
Once completed, this segment is projected to transport 13.56 million liters of sewage per day to the Kodungaiyur Sewage Treatment Plant, benefiting approximately 1,18,065 residents with 21,787 household sewage connections.
