Amidst high demand for MBBS admissions, 83 seats in Tamil Nadu will remain vacant this year, thanks to the National Medical Commission (NMC) rule which mandates that the vacant seats are returned to the state government. The vacancy includes 16 all-India quota seats in government medical colleges like Stanley, Omandurar, Coimbatore, Madurai, etc, and three in AIIMS Madurai. The state government is planning to approach the Supreme Court to fill these seats.

Out of the 83 MBBS seats that are lying vacant in the state, 16 seats are in Government Medical Colleges and 3 seats in Madurai AIIMS Hospital. These seats are yet to be filled even after four rounds of online counselling.
