The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has called for a caste survey in the state. This move comes as the party seeks to secure 10.5 percent internal reservation for the Vanniyar community within Tamil Nadu.PMK leader Anbumani Ramadoss recently held a meeting with Chief Minister MK Stalin, where he urged the government to introduce a bill during the current Assembly session to grant this internal reservation. It’s worth noting that a similar bill had previously been passed during the former AIADMK regime. However, this legislation was subsequently quashed by the Madras High Court. In response, the PMK had taken the matter to the Supreme Court.
Anbumani Ramadoss highlighted that the Supreme Court, in its judgment, had acknowledged that there was nothing inherently wrong with providing reservations for the Vanniyar community. However, the court emphasised the importance of substantiating such a move with credible data and facts.
Anbumani expressed concern over the delay in obtaining the necessary data. He pointed out that it has been nine months since the terms of reference were issued to the Backward Class Commission to collect the essential information. This delay has prompted questions regarding the reasons behind the delay and the urgency of addressing the issue.
