Over the past few months, many parks in-and-around the city are getting revamped. While it has been highly appreciated by many, there are some that are overlooked, like the Gill Nagar park.
One of the oldest in the locality, it needs care and attention, with residents stating that repeated complaints to develop it, have brought no response.
They allege that the park is visited by a lot of children who are prone to injuries, due to the damaged equipment. “Since there are no play areas here, we depend on parks. But the Gill Nagar park is in a poor condition. I am concerned about my childs safety,” says Aarthi, a parent.
For Gokul, a sixth standard student living in the neighbourhood, this is the only place to play. “Right from the time when I was eight years old, I come here along with my friends. But now we are afraid, he says. There are totally eight see-saws and four slides, of which half are broken.”
Some parents says that utmost importance must be given to the gaping hole in the main slide. ”I dont let my child play in it but others do without minding the hole. It poses a high risk and it should be repaired,” states Priya, a resident of Gill Nagar Third Street.
While the park has a good walking track and benches for senior citizens, it is the childrens play area that needs attention, feel many.
According to Srinivasan, an elderly person, “The park was opened in early 2000s during the DMK regime. Though it is still good enough for people like me, it is of no use to the little ones as the amenities are not functional. I have seen some getting injured. Like other facilities of this kind, this one too needs renovation at the earliest.”
