Chennai: As discussed in ‘News Today‘ last Thursday, a massive portion of Cauvery delta which should have been flooded by now due to the outbreak of very heavy rains in the catchment areas, continues to be dry even today, even after almost of 10 days of Cauvery waters gushing into the sea and getting wasted.

Shocking as it sounds, over 960 acres of delta farmlands in the localities of Kottur, Painganadu, Thirumakottur and many others in Tiruvarur and Mannargudi districts continue to remain dry with all of their waterbodies like lakes, ponds, small streams parched.

The villagers in these areas are in protest mode as they allege that government never took steps to clear the river pathway of obstacles like silt.

A villager has alleged that PWD officials have not even carried out 25 per cent of the desiltation process which should have been completed before the start of the southwest monsoon rains.
